Church pew; Spain, XVI century.
Description
Church pew; Spain, XVI century.
Walnut wood and lemongrass marquetry.
Measurements: 206 x 203 x 60 cm.
16th century church bench with a walnut structure, consisting of four seats with their respective arms, flat and with a curved cutout on the cross, and a flat upper body, topped by a flown cornice raised on cut and openwork corbels. The piece of furniture is decorated in the front with two-color geometric wooden marquetry, combined with expressive grain veneers. It is a typically Renaissance marquetry, which plays with the illusion of movement and three-dimensionality. In the Italian examples, it will come to suggest complete architectural spaces, built through the application of the laws of perspective, but in Spain we will more often see abstract decorations, due to the Islamic influence, although already renewed in their classic forms. and not oriental.
