Measures 97cm high x 58cm wide. He studied at the Lonja school and was one of the most outstanding portraitists of his time, and particularly of the Barcelona bourgeoisie. Considered the painter of the Restoration, he painted the portrait of the regent María Cristina de Habsburgo-Lorena with her son Alfonso XIII in 1892, and who presides over the Hall of the Queen Regent of the House of the City of Barcelona. He also devoted himself to genre painting and, especially, to Orientalist themes. His work is characterized by the precision of the drawing, the nuanced use of light and the sensuality of his figures, as well as an exhaustive precious detail, the result of his training as a goldsmith.

He traveled to Geneva to perfect the enamel technique, on his return to study painting in Barcelona at Josep Serra i Porsons studio, and then move to Paris, where he came into contact with the painter Alexandre Cabanels studio. He received a Second Medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1878 with the canvas "La Slave" (National Heritage, Madrid), which would be acquired by King Alfonso XII. In 1889 he was awarded a Third Class Medal at the Universal Exposition in Paris. Close to the group of Spanish painters in the French capital (Francisco Miralles, Romà Ribera and Federico de Madrazo), his international projection was strengthened by signing a contract with Goupil, the most important dealer of the moment, for the commercialization of his work.
