THE FAMOUS BOULLE WATCH
Boulle is a form of marquetry, based on brass and tortoiseshell, started in France by André Charles Boulle, the most famous cabinetmaker of all time. King Louis XIV gave him the title of Cabinetmaker, chiseller and marqueter of the King.
This marquetry is based on sticking thin sheets of brass and tortoiseshell on the surface of a paper on which the design has been previously drawn; then they are cut out and, when separating the sheets, the positive and the negative remain: one with the bottom of tortoiseshell and the brass drawing, called première partie and the inverse or counterpart.
Thanks to the invention of the hacksaw, (a wooden arch holding a small toothed iron hair very tightly), during the second half of the 17th century, the quality and precision were of great perfection.
Boulle executed many works that in many cases were great novelties for their aesthetics and for the variety of materials that he included in his works. Gilded bronze will play a major role in its watches and furniture, embellishing supports, corners and finishes.
