1,05m (h) x 0,85m (w) He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and was a disciple of Jean-François Portaels.1 Between 1878 and 1879 he made a study tour of Italy. It was influenced by the Italian Quattrocento and the Flemish primitives, as well as by Jules Bastien-Lepage. He moved between academic realism and symbolism, with works of high mysticism in which his social commitment is also revealed.2 His symbolist stage focused on the 1890s, with a special influence of Pre-Raphaelism, in a precise style and of colorful cold of strong allegorical component (Thought that awakens, 1891). He often used the triptych format: The Ages of the Worker (1895-1897, Musée dOrsay, Paris), The Stream, the Torrent, the Standing Water (1897-1900, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Brussels). 1 He exhibited his work in the Brussels Salon, in the Essor circle and in the Salon dArt Idéaliste. 3
On April 24, 1929, King Albert I granted him the title of baron.
