Born in 1924 in Newark, New Jersey, his life experience involves his participation in the battles of World War II, with the Tenth Mountain Division, in northern Italy.
Gino Hollander began painting in 1960 at the time when a new medium, acrylic paint, had appeared and he was one of the first to explore its possibilities. Seeing his work now, one realizes the level of virtuosity achieved, both as a painter and in the use of the acrylic medium. There are fabrics with the subtle oriental feel of dry brush made in India ink, not thick swirls of gaudy colors or soft, transparent tones, paint with spatula, drips and stains, and fine line drawings, plus a mix of oil with acrylic I sometimes combined all of these things on a five foot canvas. The end result is pure emotion. You hate or love it, but it is difficult to remain neutral.
Hollander passed away on August 27, 2015, in California, at the age of 91. His delicate state of health motivated his return to the US a few years ago, although the artist continued painting until the end.
