Travel glass; Moscow, 1841.
Description
Travel glass; Moscow, 1841.
Silver.
With punches.
In its original wooden and leather case.
Measurements: 6 x 5.5 cm.
Travel glass made of silver, in its color on the outside and gold on the inside. Shaped like a goblet, it has a low foot, somewhat narrower than the body, and an enlarged mouth, covered by a smooth lip. The body is decorated with a wide central band worked by chiselling and engraving, with large plant motifs highlighted on a nuanced background.
This glass presents the four own brands of Russian silverware from the 19th century. In the first place that of the assayer, with the illegible initials but the clear date, 1841. Secondly we see that of the silversmith, with the initials P.I.. As a locality mark we find Saint George defeating the dragon, used in Moscow between 1741 and 1898. Finally we find, stamped twice, the purity mark, an 84, corresponding to a purity of 875 thousandths.
