Collection of six dishes from FÁBRICA DE PORCELANA POPOV
Description
Collection of six dishes from FÁBRICA DE PORCELANA POPOV; Gorbunovo, Russia, 1830s-50s. Glazed porcelain. With marks on the base. Measurements: 23 cm in diameter. Set of six Russian dishes from the Popov Porcelain Factory, located in Gorbunovo, in the Moscow province. Circular in shape with a winding eaves and a profile adorned with a band in gold on white, they have a smooth seat and an eaves decoration that extends in part above the seat. It is a French-inspired decoration, derived from the colored backgrounds of the 18th century Sèvres, very much to the liking of nineteenth-century European clientele. Thus, we see a deep blue background with floral details brushed in gold, and on it lobed cartouches in reserve with naturalistic flower motifs worked in low-temperature colors. The Popov Porcelain Factory was founded by K. Milli in Gorbunovo in 1811, and in the 1850s it passed, by inheritance, into the hands of the sons of A. Popov, Dimitri and Tatiana, whose successors will be the sons of the former, Vasili , Ivan and Aleksei. At the end of the 1860s it passed into the hands of Khalatov, and its last owner will be Fomichev, until its closure in 1875. Popov was, along with Gardner and Kornilov, one of the great porcelain factories of 19th century Russia. Its pieces, varied and richly decorated, included mainly tableware and ornamental pieces such as vases, and often evoked in their ornamentation styles of the past such as Rococo or Neoclassicism, within the historicist taste typical of the time.
